From the first buds of spring to warm summer days, to colorful autumn foliage to pristine snowfall, the City of Yonkers offers a variety of activities at many of the over 100 parks and playgrounds. These facilities provide the setting for a wealth of recreational year-round opportunities and activities. Swimming, tennis, golf, softball, baseball, hiking, sledding and basketball are just a sampling of the outdoor fun that Yonkers residents can enjoy in municipal and county-owned open space and parks throughout the area. Organized activities in conjunction with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation and the various Boys and Girls Clubs throughout the city offer an array of recreational pleasures.

The City’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation operates Untermyer Park located in the northwest quadrant of the city. Featuring splendid views of the Hudson River, a Greek amphitheater and ancient Grecian gardens, Untermyer Park is the crowning jewel of the city’s parks system.

The department also operates 69 other parks and playgrounds, 74 malls, 51 ball fields, 36 tennis courts, two platform tennis courts, 50 outdoor basketball courts, a rifle range (the Coyne Park Rifle Range), nine greenhouses, two indoor swimming pools (the Linden Street Pool and the Yonkers Avenue Pool), a skating rink (the Edward J. Murray Memorial Skating Center), 1-1/4 mile track, two picnic areas, 15 senior citizen centers, a youth center and five year-round recreational community centers:

The annual Yonkers Marathon, the second oldest of its kind in the country, is sponsored by the Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. This race attracts world-class runners and thousands who come out each year to cheer them on.

Walkers can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the newly created linear Esplanade Park along the scenic Hudson River or the newly “day-lighted” saw Mill River in Larkin Plaza.
