The mission of the Yonkers Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in the City of Yonkers by enforcing the law and by providing services which protect the people, preserve the peace and contribute to a safe environment for all. Under the leadership of a Police Commissioner, the Yonkers Police Department is divided into three bureaus: Support Services Bureau, Field Services and Investigative Services Bureau. The City is divided into four patrol precincts. The Police Department maintains a K-9 unit, Inspection Service, Community Affairs, Special Operations and a Youth Services division, in addition to the Police Athletic League (P.A.L.) program which helps to foster a positive relationship between police officers and the youth of our community.

Twelve fire stations located throughout the city provide the residents with firefighting, fire prevention education, and safety. Energy and Utilities

The residents and businesses of Yonkers are currently serviced by the Consolidated Edison Company of New York, which provides electricity and natural gas. The City is party to an agreement with the Power Authority of the State of New York for the purchase of power and energy for all municipal purposes and the recent deregulation of electric service allows city residents the opportunity to select their provider. Yonkers purchases its water supply from the New York City Water system. The residents of the city reside in one of five Westchester County sewer districts financed by County Special Assessments levied upon benefited real property. Sewage treatment is provided by a plant owned by the County of Westchester. The City is responsible for the maintenance of the public sewers within the City. A small area of the City, primarily in the northwest section, has some developments which are not serviced by sanitary sewers. The main telecommunications providers in the City of Yonkers are Cablevision and Verizon.

Highways/Parkways

Strategically located just thirty minutes from New York City, Yonkers is truly at the center of it all! With convenient access to Manhattan and upstate New York, via public transportation and a number of interstates and parkways, Yonkers offers both residents and businesses the best of all possible choices for location. The New York State Thruway (I-87) running north and south links Yonkers with New York City and Albany. A primary city road, the Thruway bisects the city and provides convenient access to Manhattan, New Jersey (via the George Washington and Tappan Zee bridges), to upper Westchester County and to upstate New York. Access is also provided from the Thruway to the city’s waterfront. Four parkways, which connect with the New York State Thruway, serve Yonkers’ non-commercial traffic. The Saw Mill River Parkway runs north-south from New York City and merges with I-684, while the Bronx River Parkway runs north-south from the Sprain Brook Parkway in Bronxville, through White Plains to Valhalla, where it becomes the Taconic State Parkway. The Sprain Brook Parkway runs north-south from Bronxville to the Taconic and Saw Mill River Parkways. The Cross County Parkway, the only major roadway running east-west, connects the Saw Mill River Parkway, the Bronx River Parkway, the Hutchinson River Parkway and the New York State Thruway.
