Yonkers Public Library

This year, the Yonkers Public Library celebrates a milestone in its history, marking 125 years of service; back in 1893, State Librarian Melville Dewey (yes, the originator of the Dewey Decimal System) signed our charter and started us on a course to become the largest and busiest library in Westchester. Now with three branches, nearly 90,000 registered patrons, great collections, and popular programs for all ages, the Yonkers Public Library has much to be proud of.

With such a significant anniversary, the Library is preparing for a year-long celebration starting with the new early literacy initiative “1000 Books Before Kindergarten.” If you’re the parent of a preschooler, enroll in this program now and start your child on a fun and rewarding path to a lifelong love of reading.

To learn more about our programs and services, a good place to start is the library’s web site, www.ypl.org. Here is a sampling of some new and innovative activities at YPL:

TECH CENTRAL, Riverfront’s technology training room, is a great place to learn new software, print a 3-D model, or record a podcast. Learn new skills at your own pace, and there’s no charge! The LOCAL HISTORY INCUBATOR launches this year at the Grinton Will Branch. A growing collection of photos, documents, and oral histories will be digitized and made available to anyone who has an interest in our city’s rich history. If you have local history items to share, we’d love to talk to you.

MUSEUM PASSES are available for many popular NYC and county attractions. Bring your family to MOMA, the Intrepid, the American Museum of Natural History, and more with a pass that can be checked out for free at any of our branches.

If you haven’t visited the Yonkers Public Library in a while, you will be surprised and delighted by all that we have to offer. A library card is free, and it’s your ticket to culture, information, education, and fun. We hope to see you soon. Edward Falcone, Director director@ypl.org
